Laureates of Golden HSE 2016

On December 20, 2016, the ZIL Cultural Centre hosted this year’s Golden HSE awards ceremony. This year saw several significant changes to the award rules: new nominations have appeared, many of them were divided into categories for different groups of employees — all to help ensure HSE was able to express its gratitude to a larger number of worthy candidates.

Aiming to be more informal

The awards ceremony took place on the threshold 2017, which will be a special year for HSE – the university will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its founding, something that was mentioned in speeches throughout the evening.

Inviting the HSE’s ‘founding fathers’ – HSE Academic Supervisor Evgeny Yasin, HSE President Alexander Shokhin, HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov, and the university’s  ‘godfather’ Lev Lubimov – to the stage to give their speeches, the host wondered ‘who then is HSE’s mother?’ Shokhin answered ‘The Motherland’. ‘I'm serious. After all, 25 years ago a new Russia appeared, and one month ago we celebrated the 25th anniversary of its first government, which the following year signed a decree on HSE’s establishment. I am proud to say that I worked in that government.’

‘25 years is a third of an average human lifespan,’ said Evgeny Yasin. Voices from the audience corrected him: ‘It’s a quarter’. He continued: ‘What is a significant span in the life of a person is not much for a university or a country. Our  life is just beginning.’ He then offered the following analogy: there are entities that once flourished, but which eventually faded away, such as ZIL; there are those that are experiencing difficult times right now, and there are those that will form the future economy. HSE, in his opinion, is in this last category.

Yaroslav Kuzminov also talked about the university’s upcoming anniversary, but put things a little differently: ‘I think that 25 years is a totally insignificant term, so I was thinking we should have a mock-anniversary. That will give us the chance to look at ourselves with a degree of humor, point out our failings or weak spots, and to take ourselves less seriously. I wish we were less formal.’

‘We still have a lot of things ahead of us, and that is a bit scary,’ said Lev Lubimov, Deputy Academic Supervisor, taking up the administration’s playful mood. But then he switched to a more serious tone: ‘HSE has grown into a place where people can start their creative lives, a place for them to live a life rich in friends and colleagues, and, finally, to leave this world with dignity.’

Yaroslav Kuzminov then invited the audience to honor the memory of the recently deceased Alexander Tikhonov, MIEM Director and Academic Supervisor.

‘HSE offers an opportunity to everyone who joins it. May you always stay with HSE, whether you are currently at university or already working, in business or somewhere else’, said Lev Lubimov.

Maxim Oreshkin, HSE graduate, who was appointed Minister of Economic Development of Russia at the end of November and who has now won a Golden HSE Award, endorsed this sentiment. He said that his memories of the university are often associated with stress and intense studies, ‘but I came here – and now I want to retrurn.’
