Golden HSE Winners 2017
This year’s Golden HSE awards ceremony took place on December 1 and saw a record number of nominees with 355 contenders for 10 different nomination categories. The winners of each category were determined in two stages. In addition, this year’s event was the second time the Golden Citation award was given out. This is an ‘award within an award’ that is given to the most-cited researcher.
We Do What We Want
The Golden HSE awards ceremony ended a week of major celebrations that began on November 27, the university’s birthday. Despite the event having an ‘anti-anniversary’ format, HSE Academic Supervisor Evgeny Yasin had this to say: ‘The Higher School of Economics’ 25 anniversary is one of the most outstanding anniversary celebrations of my life. I am truly happy with the years I’ve spent at this wonderful university with you.’ He wished the university prosperity and its students and staff the same happiness that he himself found.
HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov wished the university the very best, noting that HSE had already made it through both the thick and the thin. HSE President Alexander Shokhin disagreed with this, however: ‘We’ve not only gone through thick and thin; there have been many real difficulties. We didn’t just survive, but we thrived and became a leading Russian university. This is what I congratulate you with.’
Centre for Strategic Research Board Chairman Alexey Kudrin also attended the ceremony. Mr Kudrin noted that as an economist, he recognises the university’s leading role in the economic sciences. He added that the Centre for Strategic Research ‘is relying on the university’s potential.’ ‘I hope you all remain in the avant-garde of the economics sciences,’ he concluded.
HSE St. Petersburg Director Sergey Kadochnikov, who won the Contribution to the Development of HSE award, in congratulating the university on its anniversary said he hoped the university would never be afraid of making mistakes because without mistakes, there is no movement forward. ‘We shouldn’t only do the right things. We have to take it upon ourselves to make various stupid mistakes as well. I want to wish that for all of us – for us to do what we want without being afraid to try something [new] and make a mistake because without that, you can’t have a truly new university.’
Golden HSE Winners
Achievement in Research
This prize is awarded to teachers, research associates, and postgraduate students of HSE and its branches for outstanding research findings obtained through their work at the University.
A total of three prizes were awarded:
In science, IT and engineering: Grigori Olshanski, Professor at the Joint Department with the Kharkevich Institute for Information Transmission Problems (RAS);
In social sciences and economics: Elena L. Omelchenko, Professor at the Department of Sociology,St. Petersburg School of Social Sciences and Humanities;
In humanities and communication sciences: Olga Dragoy, Associate Professor at the School of Philology.
University Teaching Success
This prize is awarded to HSE lecturers for outstanding teaching achievements, exciting lectures and seminars, useful courses and comprehensible textbooks, an attentive and objective attitude towards students, as well as actively supporting colleagues in boosting the quality of teaching at the University.
A total of five prizes were awarded:
In science, IT and engineering: Irina A. Lomazova, Professor at the School of Software Engineering;
In social sciences and economics: Vladimir G. Nikolaev, Associate Professor at the Department of General Sociology;
In humanities and arts: Michael Daniel, Professor at the School of Linguistics;
To instructors of foreign languages, military and physical training: Vladimir Avdonin, Senior Lecturer at the Department of French Language;
To the best academic supervisor of a doctoral thesis: Sergei Kuznetsov, Professor at the School of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence.
Best Expert
This prize is awarded to HSE researchers for expert analysis and publications, which have sparked major public interest or promoted serious changes in public, municipal, or corporate policies.
Winner: Mikhail Y. Blinkin, Professor at the Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism.
Friend of HSE
This prize is awarded to individuals who are not employed at HSE but whose long-term cooperation has considerably impacted the University’s development (except for charity and advisory support for HSE and decision-making as part of an executive office).
Winner: Alexander Shen,Directeur de Recherche, CNRS, LIRMM, Montpellier, France.
Best Book
This prize is awarded to HSE staff who’ve authored the best books and textbooks while working at the University. It is possible to nominate two and more candidates in this category.
The winners are researchers at the Centre for Labour Market Studies: Vladimir Gimpelson, Rostislav Kapeliushnikov, Nina Vishnevskaya, Anna Lukiyanova, Aleksey Oshchepkov, Anna Zudina, Anna Sharunina, and Evgenia Chernina.
They were awarded for a series of books, which have become an encyclopedia of the Russian labour market (2006-2017).
HSE Lyceum Teaching Success
This prize is awarded to teachers of the HSE Lyceum and cross-school HSE Lyceum for outstanding success in teaching, using innovative teaching techniques, and creativity in teaching.
Winner: Alexander Chelekhovsky, Lecturer at HSE Lyceum
Alumni Success
This prize is awarded to HSE alumni for outstanding achievements in research and teaching, as well as for developing successful careers in community work, public administration or business. A total of two prizes are awarded for:

Contribution to the Development of HSE
This prize is awarded to HSE employees whose work has resulted in improvements to the University’s reputation, as well as its visible development.
Winner: Sergey M. Kadochnikov, Professor at the St.Petersburg School of Economics and Management.
Golden Person
The prize is awarded to administrative staff at HSE study offices and other subdivisions for their initiative, friendly interactions with colleagues and students, and active sharing of experience among the University’s staff.
A total of four prizes were awarded:
To study office staff, teaching and learning support specialists, staff of continuing education programme offices: Sabina Babaeva, Head of Office of Graduate Studies;
To administrative staff of HSE faculties and central administrative bodies: Olga Churikova, Head of the Office of Academic Research;
To employees of the HSE Library, Publishing House, Office of Information Technology, Office of Public Relations and Online Media, and similar units at the University’s regional campuses: Elena Gruzinskaya, Head of the Marketing Communications Unit;
To employees of dormitories and maintenance units: Sergey Belyaev, Manager of Maintenance Department.
Silver Nestling
This prize is awarded to current HSE students and schoolchildren of the HSE Lyceum and lyceum classes for outstanding achievements in studies and research, interesting papers, a proactive attitude, and achievements in self-development.

Golden Citation
Together with Elsevier Publishing House (the Netherlands), the ‘Golden Citation’ award has been organized for HSE staff with high citation indices for papers published in the Scopus database. The winners were selected by a jury consisting of experts from HSE and Elsevier.
Winner: Christian Welzel, Chief Research Fellow at the Laboratory for Comparative Social Research, for his paper ‘How general is trust in “most people”? Solving the radius of trust problem’ // American Sociological Review, 2011.

Two International Students Receive HSE Silver Nestling Awards
At last week’s Golden HSE Award Ceremony, the winners of the Silver Nestling Award included two international students: Yunying Pei (China) of the Dual Bachelor’s Programme in Data Science and Business Analytics, and Juan Sota (Spain) of the Master’s Programme in Medieval Studies.
